Configuring a dial-up connection for Mac OS

MacOS 8.5x and 8.6 have an Internet Setup Assistant that makes connecting to the Internet easy. Follow these directions to set your computer up for the clair.net Internet Connection.

This Assistant can be run several times, and you can usually choose the back arrow button if you need to repeat a step. If a screen has multiple areas for input, you can use the TAB key to switch boxes, or simply click on the box with your mouse to fill it in.

  • Start the Assistant by clicking on the Apple Menu in the upper left hand corner
  • Select Internet Access and then select the Internet Setup Assistant.
  • Once you started the Assistant, you should see something similar to Figure 1.

  • Click the Yes button to bring up the next screen.

  • Again click the Yes button to bring up the next screen.

  • Click the right arrow to continue with the Assistant.

  • Enter clair.net for the name of this connect that you are going to create.
  • You will be using a modem to connect to the Internet, so make sure you have the Modem option selected as shown in Figure 4.
  • Click the right arrow to continue the Assistant.

  • From the modem pull down list,select the modem you have connected to your Mac.
  • Most Mac modems will be on the Modem Port of your Mac, so make sure that the modem port is selected as shown in Figure 5.
  • Once you have the proper information selected click the right arrow.

  • In the phone number box, type in the clair.net phone number for your area.
  • You can find this information on your clair.net Customer Profile sheet.
  • Enter in your Login ID from your clair.net Customer Profile Sheet in the login name, or user ID box. Make sure you type it in as it appears.
  • Next enter your password from your clair.net Customer Profile sheet in the Password box. You must be careful about typing in the password because your password is CASE SENSITIVE. You must type it as it appears on your Customer Profile sheet in order to connect to the Internet.
  • Click the right arrow once you have entered this information in correctly.

  • Clair.net does not require a Connection Script in order to connect to the Internet. Select the No option. Click the right arrow to continue the Internet Assistant.

  • Clair.net automactically assigns IP addresses to users when they connect to the Internet. Under the question "Is there an IP address for this configuration?" select No and click the right arrow.

  • In the box provided, enter the DNS addresses listed below as they appear. These numbers are also on your clair.net Customer Profile sheet:

  • 205.242.56.10
    205.242.56.11

  • In the Domain Name box, enter in clair.net (all lowercase). Click the right arrow.

  • In the address box, enter in your e-mail name followed by @clair.net. Your e-mail name can be found on your Customer Profile sheet. If you have two e-mail names, you will need to configure Outlook Express later for the second e-mail account.

    An example of what your e-mail address should look like is below:

  • mailbox@clair.net

    In the example above, my e-mail name was mailbox.

  • Next, enter your password for this e-mail account in the password box. You can find your password listed on your clair.net Customer Profile sheet. You must be careful about typing in the password because it is CASE SENSETIVE. You must type it in as it appears on your Customer Profile sheet.

  • Click the right arrow to continue.

  • Enter your e-mail name followed by @pop.clair.net in the e-mail accont box. An example of what your e-mail account should look like is below:
  • mailbox@pop.clair.net

    In the example above, I used mailbox as my e-mail name. You can find your e-mail name on your Customer Profile sheet.

  • Enter smtp.clair.net in the e-mail hosts (smtp) box.


  • Click the right arrow after you enter in the proper information.

  • clair.net does not use a proxy server so select the No option. Click the right arrow.

  • Make sure that there is a check mark in the box Connect when finished.

  • Before you click the Go Ahead button, take a minute to make sure that your phone line is properly connected to your Mac. If you have no idea how to connect your phone line to your Mac, look in the documentation that came with your Mac.

  • If you feel that your Mac is properly connected to the phone line, click the Go Ahead button.

  • Your Mac will flash a couple of windows before it dials into the Internet. The first window will tell you that it's adding the Internet configuration so your computer can access clair.net.

  • The next window that appears will report the message "Finishing". Your Mac should start to dial out. After a few seconds, your Mac will connect to the Internet and you will be left with a blank desktop.

    You are now dialed into the Internet using clair.net.
